Ted's Song of the Week - 03/30/05

Hollow
Submersed
In Due Time

I first heard this song on a commercial for the band's solo effort and became immediately interested in the song. Typically, it's kind of unusual to see a band try to sell an album by use of commercial, but it worked for STP, so i'll cut these guys some slack.
The song is comprised of chunky riffs, radio-friendly lyrics, and a bridge that is surprisingly good for a fledgling band. Lead singer Donald Carpenter displays a vocal range that is impressive while guitarists Eric Friedman and TJ Davis add musical muscle to this talented group. A must listen for fans of Creed and Drowning Pool.

Lyrics:
To you
I'm all I've left undone
I'm all I haven't won
Lift me up my soul's so hollow
Lift me up

You take
The breath you didn't make
What's left you did forsake
Lift me up my soul's so hollow
Lift me up my soul's so hollow

You can make me scream internally
You can make me breathe eternally
Yeah

You see
The things I cannot change
The things that make me plain
Lift me up my soul's so hollow
Lift me up

We've made
All from the sum of none
All that we have become
Lift me up my soul's so hollow
Lift me up my soul's so hollow

You can make me scream internally
You can make me breathe eternally

You can make me scream internally
You can make me breathe eternally
Yeah

Fill, fill what's in me
Fill, fill what's in you
Fill, fill what's in me
So my soul's not left so hollow

You can make me SCREAM
You can make me BREATHE

You can make me scream internally
You can make me breathe eternally

You can make me scream
You can make me breathe
You can make me scream
You can make me breathe, me breathe

Black Keys Tour

Having just returned from a swing through Australia and New Zealand, Akron, Ohio-based rock duo the Black Keys have confirmed a spring North American run
that will begin April 19 in Louisville and wrap May 14 in Carrboro, N.C.

The Henchmen will support, augmented by appearances by Th' Legendary Shack Shakers and the Legendary JC's in select markets.

The run comes in support of the Keys' third album, "Rubber Factory," which debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and has sold 58,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nine Black Alps - Shot Down

OK...so that post a few days ago about Nine Black Alps? Well, since then, I have spun their latest single "Shot Down" about two hundred times on my iTunes. And now it is time to share the wealth! By clicking here you will be taken to Nine Black Alps's official site where you can download a couple of their live tracks for free, including the aforementioned "Shot Down." While these live versions aren't as cleaned up or crafted as the studio versions, they still capture the vibrance of the band...for the most part at least. Keep in mind that these downloads are totally legal since it is the band's site, and the only requirement is that you have a media player capable of playing .m4a files. iTunes plays .m4as, for example.

These guys are really rocking my world right now, and from what I've read up, they just got signed to Island Records not too long ago. They also finished playing at the South by Southwest tour and came off a tour with Kaiser Chiefs over in England.

Check this up and coming band out, and load up on some of their free tracks. If you like what you hear, try to acquire the studio version of their songs---they kick so much more ass.

TEAM SLEEP Wakes Up

Finally, after more than five years of anticipation, Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno and his side project known as TEAM SLEEP have announced the release date for their debut album. The date has been set for May 10, 2005 - mark your calendars. Maverick Records, which the Deftones reside at, heard early demos from TEAM SLEEP and signed them in 2001. The tentative release date had been set for 2001 as well, but after rough copies of songs were leaked onto the internet and a couple tracks received airplay, the band had to reevaluate itself. Despite the setback, the band continued to work on new material and has been mixing it throughout the past couple years while keeping their day jobs with other groups.

"By summer 2004, TEAM SLEEP was recorded [produced by Terry Date, Ross Robinson, Greg Wells and Team Sleep], mixed and the finishing touches complete."

Moreno's Deftones have also been working on a new, soon-to-be-released album. Unlike the type of hard rock that Deftones have trademarked over the last decade, expect a softer, more ethereal release from the guys in TEAM SLEEP. For those of you who are like myself, and already have the unmastered album that was leaked to the net in 2001, you probably have some idea of what to expect from these guys. I'm definitely looking forward to a trippy, chilled out album from Chino and the gang - it's been years in the making, so be sure to pick this one up.

30 Seconds to Mars Readies Sophomore Set

That half-minute to the Red Planet known as 30 Seconds to Mars (Ok, really bad pun. Sorry.) is just about ready to release their second album. Due out August 16, "A Beautiful Lie" clocks in at only 39 minutes, yet the band describes in the linked article just how much work went into the album.

We've put in endless days and nights shedding buckets of blood, sweat and tears," the band writes on its official Web site. "We've traveled to four different continents, five different countries, seven different studios and many more f***ed up places inside ourselves during the making of this record."

FYI: The band's lead singer, Jared Leto, was an actor on My So Called Life, Panic Room and Alexander. However, for those of you who are not a fan of the slashies (actors/musical performers), don't fret. If the debut album was any indication, this band rocks and has surely earned its street cred.

Recorded in Los Angeles, New York and South Africa, "A Beautiful Lie" will be led later in spring by the single "Attack." The album also features such cuts as "The Kill," "A Modern Myth" and "The Story."

The band's self-titled 2003 debut debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and No. 107 on The Billboard 200. It has sold 102,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nine Black Alps

Well, after an extended hiatus, Lonely Note is back up and running. Thank-you all for your patience.

Anyway, I was listening to Ethel on XM and was turned on to an awesome new band, Nine Black Alps. This band resembles Nirvana in many ways, and really kicked the llama's ass. So, if you are looking for some new music to listen to, check these guys out.

To all you dedicated readers of the Lonely Note, as of tomorrow the entire LN crew will be embarking on the Spring Break adventure of a lifetime. Consequently, there will not be any new posts until after the twentieth sometime; unless, of course, one of us is able to locate a cyber cafe.

Ted's Song of the Week - 3/09/05

Cells
The Servant
The Servant

The first time i encountered this song, I was watching the trailer for the new movie, "Sin City". With an array of powerful imagery and the throbbing beats of "Cells", the trailer captivated me and I found myself watching it repeatedly. I located the artist behind the music after some checking around and found The Servant, a band described to be the love child of Ian Curtis and the Cure. "Cells" is comprised of a dark rhythmic pulse and crescendos of soaring guitars. I have no idea how the movie will turn out, but i found the song sexy enough for me to crave a cigarette afterwards.

Lyrics:
It'll all click when the mortgage clears
All our fears will disappear
Now you go to bed
I'm staying here
I've got another level that I want to clear
My skin feels like orange peel
My eyes have been vacuum-sealed
My organs move like a squirm of eels
We should be more adventurous with our meals
They annoy me those who employ me
They could destroy me
They should enjoy me
We eat chinese off our knees
And look for each other in the TV screen

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I want to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk, I'm like the rest
All I do I want to do with you

On the city's skin they move on mass
Like a rash on the back of a manky cat
Now in I go like a fool
I can't resist dipping in the pool
I watch them watch me I watch them too
Across the street across the room
I dress myself like a charcoal sketch
My eyes are brown and my hair's a mess
They annoy me those who employ me
They could destroy me
They should enjoy me
We eat Chinese off our knees
And look for each other in the TV screen

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I want to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk I'm like the rest
All I do I want to do with you

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I want to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk I'm like the rest
All I do I want to do with you

The cells I am at the moment will soon die
But I will be here
Oh I'll still be here

The cells I am at the moment will soon die
But I will be here
Oh I'll still be here

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I want to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk I'm like the rest
All I do I want to do with you

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I want to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk I'm like the rest
All I do I want to do with you

Everyday, everyday, everyday...

Ted's Song of the Week - 3/02/05

Goodnight Goodnight
Hot Hot Heat
Elevator

Hot Hot Heat are back and they haven't lost a step with their signature blend of feelgood new wave and pop. The song registers at just over 2 minutes, but it is loaded with enough catchy riffs, danceable beats, and the occasional clapping to kick the listener into a good mood. If the rest of ELEVATOR is as good as "Goodnight Goodnight", we all may be in for a treat.

Lyrics:
It's not enough to hear me say you've won,
you only wanted me for havin' fun.
but now I think you've gone and had your way,
and left me with a pile of bills to pay.
I can't even rewind the tape machine,
to listen to your drunken reasoning.

So here it is, your final lullaby:

So goodnight, goodnight.
You're embarassing me,
you're embarassing you.
So goodnight, goodnight.
Walk away from the door,
walk away from my life.
So goodnight.

I've given up on social nights at ease,
I threw 'em out when I threw out your keys.
Along with all your records I can't stand;
you never even listened to any one of them.
You're never gonna drag me out again,
with all the people that were never ever even your friends.

So here it is, your final lullaby:

So goodnight, goodnight.
You're embarassing me,
you're embarassing you.
So goodnight, goodnight.
Walk away from the door,
walk away from my life.

A little bit of rain I’d say is fair,
But why does ???
This isn't getting hurt, this is goodbye.

So goodnight, goodnight.
You're embarassing me,
you're embarassing you.
So goodnight, goodnight.
Walk away from the door,
walk away from my life.

So goodnight, goodnight.
You're embarassing me,
you're embarassing you.
So goodnight, goodnight.
Walk away from the door,
walk away from my life.
so goodnight.

New Mars Volta in Stores Today

The heavily experimental musical act Mars Volta have today released their new album, Frances the Mute, into US stores. The album is split into five parts, from the six minute radio single "The Widow", to the thirty-two minute symphonic rock opus "Cassandra Gemini." The album finds the band blurring genre lines even more than their last effort, Deloused in the Comatorium....if that is imaginable. Frances the Mute finds the band incorporating salsa, funk, hard rock, progressive, classic rock, and alternative into the mix. The result is a 75 minute head trip of an album, definitely worth checking out in full.

Delayed Coldplay Album Set for June Release

"Coldplay will release a long-awaited third album in June, the British rock band said on Tuesday as they announced plans to kick off their biggest world tour with U.K. gigs in London, Bolton and Glasgow. "
